Bio-Profile

(Ambassador) Mr. B.S. Prakash, the Consul General of India  (from Feb. 2005) is a career diplomat from the Indian Foreign Service.  Prior to his current assignment, the Consul General was the Head of the United Nations Division in the Ministry of External Affairs of the Government of India.

 

Mr. Prakash did his basic degree in Physics but shifted to Philosophy for his Post-graduate studies.  He has an M.Phil in International Relations.  Mr. Prakash was also a Senior Fellow in the programme on U.S. Foreign Policy process at the University of Maryland (1991) and was a fellow at the National Defense College in India (1989).

 

Mr. Prakash joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1975.  He has served in Indian Embassies in Germany, Saudi Arabia and Austria in different capacities.  He was the Deputy Chief of Mission in Sri Lanka (1995-98) and was India’s Ambassador in Uganda (1998-2001).  In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Prakash has worked mainly in the Divisions dealing with United Nations, Europe and also India’s immediate neighborhood.  He has been a member of the Indian delegations to the United Nations and to a number of  other multilateral conferences including the Community of Democracies and Commonwealth.  Mr. Prakash was India’s alternate representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.  He has led Indian delegations in discussions and conferences on a number of political issues such as conflict resolution, disarmament, peace operations and International law.

 

(Amb.) Prakash has written extensively on various issues in international relations.  He has several publications in academic journals on issues relating to international terrorism, UN reforms and UN Security Council restructuring, peace keeping and international humanitarian law. 

 

(Amb.) Prakash is a frequent writer in the media on literature, arts and lifestyle.  On his California experiences he now writes regularly for Indian website Rediff.com and his articles can be seen at http://www.rediff.com/news/prakash.htm. He speaks Hindi, Kannada and German.  His interest includes philosophy, literature, classical music and golf.  Mr. Prakash is married to Ratna, till recently also an Indian Government official, and has two daughters who are undergoing  graduate studies.
