MISCELLANEOUS SERVICES : Power of Attorney

3 Guidance :

  • The attestation service is provided to Indian citizens. Documents submitted by other nationals will be attested only if the document is required to be submitted for a transaction in India or it originates from India.
  • All documents should be apostilled / attested by the Authentication Division in the State Department before submission of attestation at the consulate.
  • The Power of Attorney to be attested by the Consulate should be typed on a plain paper and not on a Stamp Paper from India.  The Consulate does not provide any Stamp Paper.
  • If you are obliged to execute the Power of Attorney on a Stamp Paper from India, then please follow the ‘Apostille’ Convention.  Once the ‘Apostille’ sticker is affixed to the Power of Attorney, the Consulate is not required to authenticate again the Power of Attorney.
  • The Consular Officer reserves the right to accept or reject attestation of documents the contents of which are objectionable or contrary to the Rules.
  • All Powers of Attorneys should bear signatures, names and addresses of 2 (two) witnesses.

3 Process :

  • Attach original apostilled Power of Attorney to be attested
  • Attach photocopy of apostilled Power of Attorney for retention in the Consulate
  • Paste (not staple) photos in the spaces provided
  • Sign application

Special Requirement:

A photograph of the Executor of the Power of Attorney has to be pasted on the Power of Attorney and notarized; or

The photograph can be pasted on a separate sheet and notarized.  The sheet can be attached to the document to be notarized.

3 FEE :

  • Non-refundable $ 20 (twenty) for each attestation
  • Non-refundable $ 10 (ten) for attestation of each photograph
  • Fees should be paid through money order or cashiers’ cheque drawn in favour of the ‘Consulate General of India, San Francisco’.  Personal cheques, credit cards or other banking instruments are not accepted.
  • Fee once paid is non-refundable even if service is refused/delayed
  • The Consulate is now accepting Debit Cards with a service charge of $3.00 (three) at the counter.
3 Processing Time
  • Applying in person:
    • Same day or latest by the next working day
  • Applying by mail:
    • 10 (ten) business days excluding the time taken in mail
