No. The Embassy of India, Washington DC has outsourced the handling of Visa applications to M/S. Cox & Kings Global Services (CKGS) w.e.f. May 21, 2014. Hence all applications should be submitted to M/s CKGS who will then in turn process it and send it to the Consulate for processing. CKGS will then return the documents after processing of the applications to the applicants either by hand or through courier.

What are the prerequisites before applying for a Visa?

When applying for a visa, the validity of Passport should be at least for next 180 days or more. The passport must have at least two blank pages and should not be Mutilated / damaged / tampered  in any manner.

What is the normal duration for processing of applications by CKGS?

All applications received by CKGS will be acknowledged to the applicants within 1-2 working days. Then CKGS submits the documentation to the Consulate for review and grant of service desired.

What is the normal duration for processing of applications by the Consulate?

Consulate normally issues Emergency Visas on the same day. For US passports, it takes 2-3 working days for the issue of Normal Visas applied by hand by the applicants while Postal applications take 3-4 working days and applications applied through Third Party Agencies are processed within 4-5 working days. However, these timelines are general guidelines and in case any particular application requires extra documentation, extra administrative processing involving clearances, timelines are not specified. Non-US applications will take additional 3-4 working days over and above the timelines mentioned. For Pakistani origin and other specific categories, timelines cannot be defined.

Where can I find the guidelines / requirements for submitting applications and other documentation for Visa/OCI/Renunciation Certificates?

For detailed guidelines / timelines on submitting the applications, documentation requirements and fee etc., you may visit the following link: http://www.in.ckgs.us and www.cgisf.org.

Is the documentation list provided in the website accurate?

The Consulate has made every effort to inform the applicants of the normal documentation that is essential for submission of Visas as specified in the CKGS website. However, the Consulate reserve the right to seek additional documentation at their discretion and the same will be communicated to the applicant by CKGS. Applicants must carefully review the time period of visa that they seek and must note and understand that Visa is not a matter of right and hence the Embassy/Consulates could deny the visa if not found eligible / or does not have adequate supporting documentation or grant a visa for a period lesser than what has been requested in the application and what the applicant has paid for. There shall be no clarifications or enquiries in this regard and the decision of the Consulate will be final and binding.

Where should I approach for more information on Visa/OCI/Renunciation of Indian Citizenship services or finding the status of my application?

If you wish to seek any information regarding these services, or if you wish to ascertain status of processing of your application, or if you have any complaints/suggestions regarding the services, you must contact CKGS only.

What is the Additional Particulars Form? Is it mandatory?

CGI San Francisco has made it mandatory for all applicants to fill the Additional Particulars Form. This form is in addition to the normal Visa / OCI application form.

What are the contact points for CKGS?

Please contact Cox & Kings Global Services San Francisco at: www.in.ckgs.us. Email: <Click Here>. Visa Helpline: CKGS Call Centre numbers are (516)206-1483 & (646)589-0088.

What is the validity of Visa?

All Indian visas are valid from Date of Issue, not from date of arrival in India. Hence, applicants should apply for appropriate duration only.

What are the normal durations of visas granted to US nationals?

Normally all US nationals born in the US (without having any previous links to Pakistan and some other countries) are issued 10 year Multiple Entry Visas in Tourist Visa Category (5 years in case of Minors below the age of 18 years). Business Visas are either issued for 1 year or 5 years, Conference Visas for 3 Months, etc. This is just a guideline. Please verify the instructions and guidelines in our website at www.cgisf.org or CKGS website for further details.

What is Visa Fees?

Visa fees is processing charges for the Visa by the Indian Government (Through the Consulate General of India). However, since the process of Visa application has been outsourced, the outsourcing agency for US, M/s CKGS charge a service fee of US$ 17.00 per application and the Indian Government charges ICWF fees of US$ 3.00 per application, apart from the requisite courier/postage charges for dispatch of documents.

Is the Visa Fees refundable in case of denial of Visa or issuance of shorter duration of Visa - lesser than that requested by the applicant?

Once received the visa fees cannot be refunded under any circumstances, even if in case of visa is denied or visa is granted for a shorter period than applied for. Visa processing fee once deposited shall not be refunded. Fee should be deposited only after ascertaining all relevant details of the visa, as applicable to the purpose of travel.

Is there any way that the duration, type of Visa and number of entries given by the Consulate in a particular Visa be changed?

The duration and number of entries granted to the applicant will be solely at the discretion of Embassy/Consulates. No claims and correspondences shall be entertained in this regard.

Visas issued by the Consulate no more have signature and seal of the Consulate. Are such visas valid?

The practice of appending manual signature and affixing stamp on visa stickers have been dispensed with and the visa stickers now carry ‘ghost’ imaging and other security features.

Can I contact the Consulate to know the status of my application?

Consulate will not reply to any email or telephone enquiry for Visa services unless the service is delayed by more than 10 working days from the date of submission of all necessary documents. However, in case of problems concerning undue delay with applications you may write to complaints.ckgs@gmail.com which will enable the monitoring officer in the Consulate to check and rectify if there are any unreasonable delays.

Does the validity of existing Visa expire on acquiring of new passport in lieu of old expired passport?

The validity of an existing visa does not expire if holder acquires a new passport, as long as personal particulars and nationality of the holder have not changed. The visa holder can travel carrying old passport with valid Indian visa along with new passport. However, if such a visa holder wishes to formally transfer the visa for the remaining period of the duration of the visa onto the new passport, the applicant shall follow procedure on CKGS website. This is a purely optional choice for the applicants.

Does the Consulate always issue the visa requested for and duration asked for?

Acceptance of visa application does not automatically guarantee grant of a visa.  The visa application may be accepted, modified or refused by the Consulate in its full right. Decision of the Consulate General of India, San Francisco in the matter shall be final.

Why is there a gap between delivery of visas for members of same family even though they apply together?

Each visa application is processed individually by the Consulate. As a result processing times may vary between applications that appear to be similar. It is common for families and groups who have submitted their applications simultaneously to receive their visas with a few days gap. Certain visa categories go through a closer examination requiring additional time to process. The Consulate reserves the right to withhold any application submitted for an in-depth examination.

What happens if some facts or information are either misrepresented or suppressed?

Suppression of facts and information will not only result in delay/ or denial of visa applied for but will also debar the applicant from applying under this system in future.

Can I complain on Visa being not issued?

Visa is not a right. It is a privilege extended by the host country, the decision for which is based on the application itself, documents enclosed with the application and personal interview if necessary with the Visa Officer. Visa can be denied without assigning any reason. However, if you feel that the visa process has taken unfairly longer periods for processing than normal, you are free to contact the outsourcing agency M/s CKGS at Feedback/Complaints or the Consulate at complaints.ckgs@gmail.com or to the concerned officer at visa.clearance@cgisf.org. Consulate has a robust grievance redressal mechanism which resolves such complaints within 48 hours.

What is the normal processing time for applications of persons of Pakistani origin?

Processing time of applications received from persons of Pakistani origin takes longer since there are additional administrative procedures involved. There is no exact time frame involved. Processing time for applications from Pakistani nationals/those holding dual nationality can be substantially longer.

What is the advise for dual citizens holding US and Pakistani nationality?

All applicants of Pakistani origin who hold dual nationality must apply for an Indian Visa on their Pakistani passport. Those who have either renounced Pakistani nationality or cancelled their Pakistani passport would need to submit documentary proof in this regard.

Can everyone get an Entry Visa?

Any US national who has Indian origin gets an Entry Visa if so desired. Entry Visa is also granted to spouse or child of a person of Indian origin or spouse or dependent family member of a foreign national coming to India on long term visa such as Employment, Business, Research or Student Visas.

What is the additional documentation required in case of OCI/PIO/Visa obtained by applicant by virtue of being a spouse of an eligible person of Indian origin?

In case of OCI/PIO/Visa obtained by applicant by virtue of being a spouse of an eligible person of Indian origin, the applicant must submit a declaration by the spouse stating that he/she has no objection for issuance of OCI/PIO card/visa. In the   event of a divorce/separation between the two persons who obtained the OCI/PIO/Visa documents from the Indian Consulate, the OCI/PIO cards will be required to be surrendered. It is the duty of the applicants to report and inform such events to the Consulate General of India, San Francisco for further necessary action as per Government of India rules and regulations.
